How to Maximise Loft Storage: 8 Practical Tips

To get the most from your loft, board it on a raised floor that protects the insulation, fit a proper ladder and a light, then store smart — uniform boxes, clear labels, heavy items over load-bearing walls, and nothing damp or heat-sensitive. Here are eight practical tips.

1. Board it on a raised floor

The single biggest upgrade. A raised boarding system gives you a solid, walkable floor while keeping your insulation uncompressed underneath — storage and warmth, not one at the expense of the other.

2. Fit a proper loft ladder

A safe, sturdy ladder turns a loft you avoid into one you actually use. It also makes loading and unloading far safer than a wobbly step ladder.

3. Add a light

A simple loft light (and ideally a switch at the hatch) means you can find things without juggling a torch. We fit lighting and tidy the cabling as part of many jobs.

4. Use uniform, stackable boxes

Clear, lidded plastic boxes of the same size stack neatly, keep dust and pests out, and let you see what's inside. Avoid cardboard — it sags and attracts damp.

5. Label everything

Label the ends of boxes that face the hatch so you can read them at a glance. A quick inventory list by the hatch saves a lot of rummaging.

6. Put weight over the walls

Store the heaviest items over load-bearing walls rather than in the middle of an unsupported span. A properly built raised floor is designed for storage loads — your installer can advise on what's safe.

7. Don't store the wrong things up there

  • Avoid anything that hates heat or cold: candles, electronics, vinyl records, paint.
  • Keep documents and photos in sealed, waterproof containers.
  • Never block air flow at the eaves — the roof needs to breathe.

8. Plan the layout before you fill it

Keep a clear walkway from the hatch, put rarely-used items at the back, and leave the easy-reach space for things you get out often.

Common questions

A properly built raised loft floor is designed for domestic storage loads. Keep the heaviest items over load-bearing walls and avoid overloading a single unsupported span — your installer will advise during the survey.

Avoid heat- or cold-sensitive items like candles, electronics, paint and vinyl, and keep important documents in sealed waterproof boxes. Never block the eaves ventilation.

It's not essential but it makes a huge difference to how usable the space is. We can fit a loft light and a switch at the hatch as part of the job.
