How to Prepare Your Loft for Boarding: A Simple Checklist
A boarded loft can be fitted in about a day, and a little preparation beforehand makes the whole job faster, cleaner and cheaper. If you're booking loft boarding in Rainham or anywhere across Kent, here's a simple checklist to get your loft ready.
1. Clear what you can reach
Move boxes, bags and anything stored loose down to a spare room or landing. You don't have to empty it completely — a good fitter works around items stacked over the load-bearing walls — but the clearer the space, the quicker the boards go down.
Tip: take a few photos before you move things so everything goes back where it was.
2. Check your insulation
Most lofts have loose or roll insulation between the joists. It should stay — a raised loft flooring system sits above it so the insulation keeps doing its job. If yours is thin, damp or patchy, mention it when you book so it's sorted first.
3. Sort out access
- Make sure the loft hatch opens fully and isn't painted shut.
- Clear the landing below so a ladder can be set up safely.
- If the hatch is small or awkward, ask about a wider, insulated hatch and a proper ladder — it makes the space genuinely usable.
4. Note anything in the way
Water tanks, pipes, cables and downlights all sit in the loft. A good fitter boards around them and keeps access to anything that might need maintenance. Point out what you already know about so it's planned for, not discovered halfway through.
What to leave to the fitter
You don't need to lift boards, move insulation or build a raised frame yourself — that's the job. Part-boarding it first usually costs more to put right. Just clear the space and leave the rest to us.
| You do | We do |
|---|---|
| Clear stored items | Build the raised floor |
| Clear the landing | Board over the insulation |
| Flag tanks, pipes, lights | Board around them safely |
| Tell us about access | Fit a wider hatch & ladder |

Common questions
No. Clear what you easily can, but your fitter can work around items stacked over the load-bearing walls. A clearer loft just means a faster, tidier job.
Not with a raised floor. A raised loft flooring system sits above the insulation so it keeps working — that's the right way to board a loft.
Most domestic lofts are boarded in about a day, depending on size and whether you're also having a new hatch or ladder fitted.
