Roughly a quarter of the heat lost from an uninsulated home goes through the roof. If your loft has thin, old or squashed insulation, it is the cheapest heat-loss problem in the house to fix — and the natural time to do it is while the floor is up anyway.
In short — what loft insulation is
Loft insulation work covers topping up, replacing or re-lofting the mineral wool across a loft floor so it reaches the depth current Building Regulations expect, which is around 270–300mm. Older homes are frequently found with 100mm or less, or with insulation flattened by years of storage, and both leave a significant amount of heat escaping through the ceiling. What we usually find
Homes insulated before the mid-2000s often have 100mm or less, laid once and never touched. Homes where the loft has been used for storage have insulation crushed flat under boards or boxes, which is not much better than having none in that area.
Either way the fix is the same: lift out what's there, lay new mineral wool to current depth across the whole floor, and then keep it that way with a raised floor rather than putting boards straight back on top of it.
Insulation and boarding belong in the same job
Doing the two separately means paying twice to get into the same space. Doing them together means the insulation goes in at full depth, the raised frame goes on above it, and neither ever compromises the other.
It also means the parts of the loft nobody can reach once the floor is down — the eaves, the corners behind the trusses — get done properly while there's still access to them.
Lighting while we're up there
A loft with no light is a loft you use with a phone torch in your teeth. We fit loft lighting and run the cabling tidily, clipped and clear of the boards, so nothing is trapped under the floor.
It costs very little on top of a boarding job and it is consistently the thing customers say they should have done sooner.
