Why the original hatch is usually the problem
Builders fit the smallest hatch the regulations allow, because it is cheaper and faster. That often means an opening you can get your head and one shoulder through, which rules out a ladder entirely and makes carrying anything bulky up there genuinely awkward.
The door itself is frequently a plain board dropped into a rebate. No insulation, no seal, and a straight path for warm air to escape into a cold roof space — a permanent draught in the middle of your landing ceiling.
